On a battlefield of Kurukshetra great warrior, Arjuna was very stressed because of fighting against his teachers, forefathers, friends, relatives, warriors age of his father, sons, and grandsons.
Arjuna was a great fighter and he was sure that Pandavas will win and because he didn’t want to take the blame on him to be called a killer of Kurus that’s why he was stressed. And by any chance, if Pandavas will loose then he will lose his reputation as well that was also a reason for his anxiety. He was so confused because of his anxiety or stress that he was not able to fight or act and he spoke these words
Bhagavad Gita 2.7
karpanya-dosopahata-svabhavahprcchami tvam dharma-sammudha-cetahyac chreyah syan niscitam bruhi tan mesisyas te ‘ham sadhi mam tvam prapannam
Nowadays this is a common scenario in everyone’s life. The whole world is suffering from depression, anxiety, and stress.
Till the time we are on material or bodily platform, we will not be able to overcome depression, anxiety, and stress. Material activities bind us with Success and Failure which are the bodily concept of life. We act with the help of gross body or material body (made from the matter) and one who knows only the gross body or material platform they get affected by the results of their actions.
Now a knowledgeable person knows that above gross body he has a subtle body too (mind, intelligence, and ego) and it can discriminate to rise above material life (or modes of life namely Goodness, Passion, Ignorance). He also knows that Above mind there is intelligence and above intelligence there is Ego. Now my false ego tells me that you are Rohit Pandey, Son of so and so. You have to achieve something and if you won’t then you will surely get neglected by the world (which actually happens). This is how false ego works. It creates a wrong identification with the material world, which is result-oriented. Good results satisfy us and bad results depress us.
Now one who rightly identifies himself as Soul (because of Ego) knows the real purpose of life. He knows that Soul is above Gross and Subtle body. And one who knows this acts on Spiritual platform or says Devotional platform. He never gets interested in inaction because he knows that soul is always active ( How can an active thing pursue inaction). He always performs his prescribed duties or works without bodily or material affection.
This way he increases the efficiency of his work too because it’s free from the anxiety of winning or losing. And because He knows that the result of his work is affected by laws of nature and past deeds as well, He simply surrenders the result of work (Good Or Bad) to God. This is taught by Lord Krishna in a most heard Shloka of :
Bhagavad Gita 2.47 –
karmany evadhikaras tema phalesu kadacanama karma-phala-hetur bhurma te sango ‘stv akarmani
You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty.
4 teaching of this Shloka
This way we will actually serve the root and prevent our generation from depression, anxiety, stress, and its repercussions.
Having said that there are other inbuilt reasons as well for depression (hormonal, neurotransmitters imbalance, genetic) which needs direct consultation of specialists. However, meditation and devotional service are very effective and helpful to come out of this as well.
Hare Krishna 🙏
