The trio posted a statement saying that “when we set out together almost 14 years ago we named our band after the Southern ‘Antebellum’ style home where we took our first photo, as musicians, it reminded us of all the music born in the South that influenced us…. Southern rock, Blues, R&B, gospel, and of course country,” the band added by saying “But we are regretful and embarrassed to say that we did not take into account the association that weigh down the word referring to the period of history before the civil war, which included slavery.”

The trio of Hillary Scott, Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley added an apology saying that the “are deeply sorry for the hurt they have caused and for anyone who has felt unsafe, unseen, or unvalued. Causing pain was never our hearts intentions but it doesn’t change the fact that indeed, it did just that. ”

With the whole country talking about taking step to change the imbalance and racial injustice, the trio took the step by changing the term ‘Antebellum’, which came from the Latien for “before war” which is generally used to refer to the antebellum South, pre-civil war, romanticizing the plantation while not paying attention or overlooking to the centuries of black slavery.

As the trio admitted that the blind spots that they didn’t even know existed has been revealed, the band vowed that the change of the bands name is only the very first step amongst the many steps they will be taking to practice anti-racism.

The Lady A band conclude their statement and vow by saying “we will continue to educate ourselves, have hard conversations and search the parts of our hearts that need penury—to grow into better humans, better neighbours, ” they added by saying “Our next outward step will be a donation to the equal justice initiative through Ladyaid. Our prayer is that if we lead by example… with humility, love, empathy and action….. we can be better allies to those who are suffering from spoken and unspoken injustice, while influencing our children and generations to come.”
