The Weeknd reveals the truth behind writing those breakup songs following the split with Selena Gomez
Be it a Hollywood celebrity or a common person, break ups is difficult to handle. The Weeknd isn’t the type of person to share extensive details about his private life, girlfriends, past or present; but in a very recent interview with Esquire did spill the beans about the break up songs which he wrote after splitting up with Selena Gomez.
The 2018 EP My Dear Melancholy is widely believed to a break up album, which he wrote after his break up with Selena Gomez; all because of the ensured lyrical call outs for Selena. The song has many references to Selena Gomez as well as to Bella Hadid.
The Weeknd revealed that creating these songs were cathartic and also revealed the reason for it to be so short. He said that; “The reason why it was so short is like, I think I just had nothing else to say on this…. Whatever…”.
He continued and said that; “It was like this Cathartic piece of art. And yeah, it was short, because that’s all I had to say on that situation.”
The Weeknd admits that writing these songs did make him feel better by saying that; “Yeah, of course. I mean, that would have sucked if I didn’t”.
Although when the question of as to whom those songs were dedicated to was directly asked by the Esquire reporters; He simply and in almost apologetically declined to answer the question by just saying two words “No Comments”.
The Weeknd and Selena Gomez Relationship Timeline
The Weeknd and Selena Gomez dated for almost 10 months that is from January 2017 to October 2017.
He started dating Selena Gomez just after few months of breakup with Bella Hadid. It was this summer when Selena had her Kidney transplant surgery and after the breaking up with The Weeknd, Selena Gomez started seeing and spending time with her ex Justin Bieber. Selena getting back with Justin Bieber also didn’t last much long and ended somewhere in March 2018.
Meanwhile, around in 2018 The Weeknd got back together with Bella Hadid but wnet their separate ways in 2019. But it seems like they are still friendly to each other after breaking up twice.
The song “Call Out My Name” from ‘My Dear Melancholy’ was the one which created the most buzz about Selena Gomez’s and The Weeknd’s relationship.
Apparently it’s believed that the song featured lyrics which referenced to Selena and Justin getting back together. The featured lyrics were like; “Guess I was just another pit stop ’til you made up your mind”; and “I helped you out of a broken place”.
Although Selena got her Kidney from her friend Francia Raisa; The Weeknd hinted in his lyrics that he was ready to give Selena his Kidney when she was in need in 2017’s kidney transplant. The lyrics which he sang were like; “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life”.
