Johnny Depp testified that his ex-wife Amber Heard is making “sick” claims of abuse and has falsely branded him as a monster in a U.K. libel.
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star did admit to excessive drinking, trashing hotel rooms and drug taking but has strongly denied the accusations of abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard. Johnny Depp gave a written witness statement “These ick claims are totally untrue”, to which Johnny Depp added that these allegations hurt his career and are being a constant issues in his casting.
The three week trials over Johnny Depp libel claims opened on Tuesday at the high court in London. Johnny Depp made his entry in the court wearing a dark black suit and tie.
The lead counsel of the actor, David Sherborne claims that the Hollywood star has come to court to clear his reputation.
Sherborne in his written opening remarks said that the court needs to decide “whether the allegations published by the defendants are true.”
“If its finds that they are untrue, as we say they are, then the court will proceed to make an award of damages” he added. As he continued with his opening remarks he said, “It will come as no surprise to hear that this is not a case about money. It is about vindication. Mr Depp has made that clear at various hearings. That is why he has come here – to clear his reputation.”
This legal action was brought by Johnny Depp after the Sun and the executive editor, David Wooton published an article which described Johnny Depp as a wife-beater.
Sherborne claims that the article written by Wooton, “repeated Ms Heards allegations, referring to what he describes as ‘overwhelming evidence’ in her favour, in a obvious attempt to confirm categorically in the readers minds, several million readers minds, that these appealing and serious allegations of criminality were true.”
Sherborne said that, “MS Heard has invented these stories of serious violence.”
In the written submission from the parties were released as the hearing began, Johnny Depp claimed that Heard had repeatedly punched him in the face and partially sever his finger by throwing a vodka bottle.
While in the opening not of Sasha Wass QC barrister for News Group Newspaper said that “the defendants will demonstrate that the description of Mr Depp as a ‘wife-beater’ is entirely accurate and truthful”.
“They will show that the sting of the article is correct – namely that the claimant beat his wife causing her to suffer significant injury and on occasions leading to her fearing for her life” she added.
As she continued she said “This defence is supported by witness testimony, medical evidence, photographs, video, audios recordings, digital evidence and Mr Depp’s own texts.”
The trials continued.
