Gilbert Burn has given the most impressive performance of his career and dominated Woodley for all 25 minutes.
Gilbert Burns is a Brazilian – American professional Mixed Martial artist. He is currently 33 years old and competes in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Division (UFC). This year in March he was at #6 in the Welterweight rankings. Burns is a three-time world champion and world cup gold medalist. For those who may not Burns is the older brother of fellow UFC fighter Herbert Burns.
Former Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns got face to face in the main event of UFC fight night on Saturday at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas. Burns even warned that there are going to be changing of the guard in the Welterweight division.
He managed to maintain his complete dominance throughout the match with resounded unanimous decision (50-45, 50-44, 50-44) and he proved that he was right.
The 33-year-old Grappler is now 4-0 as a Welterweight and currently, at number 6 in UFC Welterweight ranking and after this dominant performance, he is sure to make improvements in the ranking against the No. 1 ranked fighter in the division.
Burns is a highly decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner if you don’t know and since the opening bell, demonstrated his improved striking by detonating a huge right hand on Woodley and sent him to the canvas. Gilbert then, chased the former champion to the mat, quickly mounted him, and rained down a punishment that opened a rift on Woodley’s eyebrow.
Woodley with his senses intact smothered the ground control, managed to get himself out, and escaped the round.
In the second round, Tyron did a little better but then, Gilbert ducked under a right hand, and took his opponent to the canvas, with a beautiful takedown. Throughout the round, Burns was the superior fighter, Woodley needed a remarkable comeback to get himself back in the game, but it didn’t happen.
When it was apparent to Woodley that he is lacking behind the in the scorecard, Woodley pulled himself back and looked to counter, but then there was Burns who was showing an excellent display with right hands and leg kicks, and destroyed Woodley’s mobility in the cage.
In the fourth round, Gilbert exploded and posted a three deadly punch combination, that sent Woodley to the knee, forced him to nail down. Burns again took advantage of his opponent on the mat, as soon as he was down. In the last round, Woodley being desperate tried to land a big hand, but Burns was too sharp to notice that and didn’t give any moment of advantage to the Woodley in the fight.
Tyron Woodley, last year dropped the title to Kamaru Usman, gave a very disappointing performance. Since then, he was on lay off approximately for 14 months. He was expected to give something better to his fans and in the end, found him on the wrong side again.
Burns with his exceptional performance has put himself for the title contention. Burns has asked for a shot at Usman’s title for his next fight. It might sound very preposterous 12 months ago, but Burns is the fastest rising star in the Welterweight division, undoubtedly.
